We are working alongside an international and highly reputable auction house to assist in their search for a Head of Department for 20th Century Decorative Arts and Design.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead and exemplify strong management skills to enhance productivity within the 20th Century Decorative Arts Department.
* Proven “Business Getting” experience, with a demonstrated history of meeting consignment targets.
* Ensure timely support in cataloguing and production of catalogues to meet printing and distribution deadlines.
* Provide expert assistance in cataloguing for all sales, with a focus on decorative arts items including furniture, ceramics, glass, and metalware from the 20th century.
* Maintain and develop relationships with collectors, decorators, and institutions with interests in modern and contemporary decorative arts.
* Achieve budgeted commission levels and actively monitor departmental financials.
* Cultivate positive relationships with trade and professional associations to further department growth.
* Actively seek out new business opportunities and maintain a robust database of buyers and vendors.
* Ensure the department complies with all contractual obligations to buyers and vendors.
* Host and entertain clients as required to build and maintain strong customer relationships.
* Oversee the 20th Century Decorative Arts and Design department's budget and optimize spending to maximize benefits.
Skills Required:
* A degree in Art History, Design, or a related field with a specialization in 20th Century Decorative Arts.
* Proven track record of leadership in a similar role or extensive experience in the auction business, specifically in decorative arts.
* Demonstrated expertise in 20th Century Decorative Arts, including a deep understanding of movements such as Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau & Art Deco, design.
* Comprehensive knowledge of key artists and designers.
* Established connections with major dealers, collectors, and curators in the field of modern and contemporary decorative arts.
* Ability to travel as needed for business development, client visits, and collection assessments.
* Excellent communication (verbal and written), organizational, and networking skills.
* Proficiency in IT and database management tools
