Job Title: Principal Instrumentation Engineer
Location: Aberdeen
Overview:
As a Principal Instrumentation Engineer, you will be responsible for leading and managing control and instrumentation engineering activities within a company or project. Your role involves overseeing the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of control systems and instrumentation for various industrial processes and projects. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that control and instrumentation solutions meet technical requirements, regulatory standards, and project objectives.
Responsibilities:
* Leading and supervising a team of control and instrumentation engineers, technicians, and designers in the execution of projects.
* Develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets for control and instrumentation engineering tasks.
* Design, review, and approve control system architectures, control logic, and instrumentation specifications.
* Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments for proposed control and instrumentation solutions.
* Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, such as electrical, mechanical, and process engineering, to integrate control systems into overall project designs.
* Collaborate with vendors and contractors to procure control hardware, software, and instrumentation components.
* Perform detailed engineering calculations, simulations, and analyses to validate control system performance.
* Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations in the design and implementation of control and instrumentation systems.
* Provide technical guidance and support to project teams during construction, commissioning, and startup phases.
* Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues related to control systems and instrumentation.
* Stay updated on emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in control and instrumentation engineering.
* Work activities will include both project and proposal work where both the technical approach and continuity must be aligned.
* Work activities for both projects and proposals will be executed across all phases of projects including Conceptual Studies; Basic; FEED; Detailed Design; Procurement through to Commissioning.
* Projects and proposals are for process plants and facilities across the Chemical; Oil and Gas; Power and Energy Transition/ New Energy sectors.
* Project work will include the development of Instrument Engineering deliverables as required on a project-by-project basis.
* Project work as the functional Lead Engineer for projects as required by the C&I Group Manager.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or related field. Advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) preferred.
* Proven experience in control and instrumentation engineering, with a focus on industrial projects.
* Strong technical expertise in control system design, programming, and implementation using PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), DCS (Distributed Control Systems), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), and other relevant platforms.
* Proficiency in instrumentation selection, specification, calibration, and troubleshooting for various industrial processes.
* Solid understanding of process control fundamentals, including PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control, loop tuning, and advanced control strategies.
* Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively.
* Familiarity with project management principles and tools.
* Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
* Professional engineering license or certification (e.g., PE, CEng) preferred.
* Brownfield experience
